This is really odd for them to do. Are you buying through Amazon.com or a foreign Amazon? Also, at what point in the process did they ask you for confirmation? Was it when you added it to the cart or when you checked out?
I am just trying to find out what is going on, so please bear with me. :) And yes, I hope it is selling like hotcakes ... I'll find out in a few months. |

I'm buying from Spain (southern Europe :)) through Amazon.com. I bought 3 books, previously waiting for the three of them to be marked as "In stock", to avoid delays. They said nothing throught all the shopping process about possible delays.
One day later, they sent me only two of them (with a "Your Amazon.com order has shipped" mail that excluded your book), but still marked yours with the same delivery date estimation. Two days more and they send me this mail:
| Quote: | Hello from Amazon.com.
We wanted to let you know that there is a delay with some items
in the order you placed on ******.
Please visit the Order Update page in Your Account at the address below to
approve the delay for the unavailable items:
http://www.amazon.com****
By approving the delay, you are letting us know that you still want
us to ship the unavailable items to you as soon as possible, though
they may arrive later than expected. If we have not received your
approval by May 24 2007 and the items are still not available,
we will cancel them from your order.
We apologize for the inconvenience caused by this delay. |
So I approved the delay, and now my delivery estimation has changed from May, 10th to "June 12, 2007 - June 25, 2007". |

| I'm not totally sure, but I think this is because you are a foreign customer. I haven't heard anything like this from people in the US. Sorry for the delay nevertheless! |

My editor just said:
| Quote: | | Because amazon has such a vast warehouse distribution network, even their systems get funny the first few days. I suggest following up with that email, and tell him you talked to your editor, and he said "that message is just amazon adjusting its inventory reporting since the book only released a few days ago, and the book will almost certainly ship within the next few days." |
So, don't worry. They should be working things out soon. |

Andrew is your book also suited for beginners?
I just learned C for beginners (Ivor Horton's book) and would like to learn GTK+ .
Could you give me some advise here? |

As long as you know the basics of C, you will be able to use the book. It starts from the very basics of GTK+, covering most of the library and its supporting libraries such as GLib, Pango, GDK, and GdkPixbuf.
So, yes. You would certainly be able to use it. And if you have any questions as you go along, feel free to ask! |

What's the basic of C??
Pointers, structures, array??
Do I have to know things like linked lists, hash tress, binary trees etc etc? |

| You need to know what the main function is, basic data types like int and char, and how to include a header file. There are little things here and there that might creep up. For example, in Chapter 6, the Hash Tables section assumes that you know how the data structure works, but that information isn't used anywhere else in the book. As long as you can write a very simple program, you will be fine. |

I would like to point out that I started learning C and GTK+ concurrently. Granted, I programmed in many other languages, but prior to working in GTK+ I had only done a couple of small embedded (microcontroller) programs in C.
I just kept the old K&R The C Programming Language book on hand to fill in any blanks. The most significant thing for me in learning GTK+ in parallel with C was understanding how people use structures in C and in GTK+ and of course pointers. |

Boy, I'm glad I got my copy couple months ago!
Hi Andrew! I'm from Shamokin PA - work at Bloomsburg! Old PSU grad!
I'm just really starting with the book (and Linux programming for that matter). But the book is good so far. I thought there might have been a better description of g_signal_connect_swapped() in chapter 2, but I eventually figured it out. I learned a good bit by modifying your button program to work with g_signal_connect instead.
I like that all the programs seem to compile & run 'as-is' without any fixes from me. I downloaded the source too.
I'm eager to proceed with learning Linux programming. I'm basically a Windows API style developer, and my favorite languages are C & C++, although for desktop Windows apps I usually use PowerBASIC.
So far in Linux I've tinkered with XLib, Motif, and most recently GTK.
This is a nice Forum. I know I'm getting ahead of myself in my learning endeavors, but I just yesterday got skimming ahead in the book looking for the GTK counterpart to Windows TextOut()/DrawText(), but didn't really find it. So I came here and did some searches and found at...
WON't LET ME POST LINK - I TOOK IT OUT
just what I was looking for! So far so good!
