How many here always download and compile the latest version of GTK, and how many do as I do - just use whatever version comes with your Linux distro?

I stick with the latest version available for Fedora Core that I am running. I figure I'm too new at this to appreciate the new features and fixes as I'm still too busy appreciated the old features.
I even use a really old Gnome Programming book as a reference (the one by Havoc Pennington). |

As a developer, I try not to upgrade until Ubuntu does because that is when it is Debian unstable. That way I can make sure that my application will work on many computers without effort. But then again, I just added new features available in Gtk 2.6.x about 2 months ago, so I'm pretty far behind.
I think compatability and ease of installation for the user is the most important thing, & if the only way to compile OpenLDev is to compile the latest sources of Gtk, then most people won't use it (irregardless of the fact that it is developers that use my app...) |

For the system-wide version I stick with the packages that come with the distro (FC4 in my case). I just do occasional updates should they be provided by the Fedora-project. Aside from that I also keep a local install of official releases made directly by www.gtk.org/gtkmm.sf.net/cairographics.org. Sometimes a cvs-HEAD version of some part slips into this too. With that I do most of my coding.
Best regards...
