Hi,

First is why? If you do this it would not be a good experience for the user having the way the keyboard behaves change without notice. The user could have another application running at the same time which could be messed up if you do this.

Next is portability, not all keyboards have a num-lock key for example the Apple Mac keyboard.

GTK+/GDK provides a way to read the keyboard modifier state such as num-lock, but as far as I can see not a way to set it. To do this you would need to go to much lower APIs.
