Hello and welcome to the GTK+ forums!

You can only draw onto widgets from GtkWidget::expose-event handler. This way things aren't broken and they are automatically updated when windowing system needs to refresh your screen.

There are quite a few simple examples of how to draw onto GtkDrawingArea, so I would advise you to have a look at them.
