I have a navigation gadget that is supposed to move things in any direction. However, I want it to be able to cause orthogonal movement also. So I linked the action to the state of the CTRL and ALT keys, so that CTRL would cause the direction to be up or down, and ALT would cause it to be right or left.

In Ubuntu 12.04 this does not work. The onButtonPress handler for my drawing area does not even get called if the ALT key is down.

I have disabled the use of the ALT key in compiz, and in system settings, but I don't seem to be able to change this behavior.

Does anyone know a way around this?
