Hi,
at my job we installed either gtk3 and gtkmm3 on an embedded linux board.
We wrote several apps in both gtk3 and gtkmm3 (but never the same app in both languages).
It seems to us that applications written in gtk3 are quite faster than applications written in gtkmm3,
can anybody confirm it or deny my impressions?

Any application written using gtkmm or any other language binding will be a little bit slower than the plain C API to GTK due to the over heads involved. These over heads are tiny and most calls to GTK via a binding the over head would be just a tiny fraction of a percent of the whole call. Since you are not comparing like with like you are not really doing a proper test and if you are really worried about performance you should try using a profiler to find out where the most time is spent in an application.

By the way I use gtkmm a far bit and in an application which involves processing audio with displaying up to date information on the many playing tracks in a window. So far I have not found using gtkmm a problem in terms of speed.

Still seems kind of heavyweight for an embedded app, doesn't it? A fork specifically for embedded apps would be an interesting project... hmmm...

Hi,

There are other C++ bindings for GTK. Probably the main other one is Xfce foundation classes. It gains slightly more efficiency over gtkmm by not using many C++ features. Again like many others it has not gained much use and fallen out of use by many.

If you need full control and the ultimate efficiency for an embedded system then C++ is not really the language to go for, just stick with C and use the GTK+ API directly.
